KW Designs Photography | Lakewood Colorado Photographer | Women in Business Blog Series
I’m so excited to be able to get back to presenting my blog series “Women in Business” again. I’ve missed getting to know the other local women who are pursuing their dreams and making them come true through entrepreneurship. This isn’t the easiest path and I love the opportunity to spotlight other businesses and learn more about their tricks to success.
These blogs are designed to celebrate all of it and share how each of us grows and gets through the tough times to enjoy the best times even more. To kick it all off, I’m introducing myself so those of you that are new to me will get a better idea of why I love working with young couples and families.
Here we go!!!
It was a dark and stormy day in the early 90’s in San Francisco, the rain pounding against the studio windows while I gaze in amazement at captivating pictures of animals all around me when all of the sudden…
Kidding! And, no, I’m not.
The timing, location, and setting are all correct, and it’s my Uncle’s studio where I was first fully exposed to photography. I was lucky enough to see his creativity and what he was able to do through photography. From then on, a camera was always in my hand.
I loved capturing everything from people, to things, and especially food. It was always fun for me and I didn’t give in to the idea that photography could be my profession until 2013.
Before that, the closest I got was working as a Media Technology teacher for high school students. I knew I wanted to be in some form of media, just didn’t know exactly how it would work out.
The time I spent working in my early career created a level of comfort and enjoyment with details, editing, and ensuring the composition of a picture was all in place to be pleasing for the eye.
I know that anyone can take a picture and edit it with the technology that’s available. The part that keeps me from falling into fear around that is the flow that I find in the editing and the creativity.
I love being creative, and crafting things from wine cork wreaths, keepsake ornaments, to any other craft that peaks my attention is a great outlet to keep me inspired to try new things. In fact, it’s trying new things that’s my main source of motivation.
Creating a plan with clients can keep us focused on an outcome, and there are things that I wouldn’t even think of that a client will propose. This collaboration and shared creation really brings inspiration to the table, and the connection with a client and their family begins.
There’s laughter and relatability as the collaboration keeps on going, and when I get the chance to go to their home the next year, or even a few years later, and see the pictures we took hanging on the walls, I feel proud of the work we get to do together. I love that my work and vision is a beautiful memory on their walls.
There’s excitement at helping them tell their families' stories through the images, the smiles, and the fun we all have in our sessions. These moments keep me going, keep me excited about this work that just isn’t work.
As I get ready to pop my headphones on and get into the editing zone, let me share a few fun facts that you may never know if it wasn’t for this post:
I love tacos. Any time of day.
My nicknames are Mommit and Punkey. Can you guess who calls me either?
A glass of champagne and Ferrero Rocher makes me smile, but a text picture of my niece or nephew makes me smile most.
My last read was The Season of Us by Holly Chamberlin.
What I’m most proud of professionally in 2020 is photographing out of a studio space, and actually, the best was keeping it organized (I CAN DO IT!!).
I’ll leave you with this, my motto to live by is:
A life spent helping others is a life filled with purpose.
Thank you, each and every one of you, for filling my life with purpose.
