Twas the night before a pandemic Christmas,
And all through the house,
No one was hurrying,
Not even the favorite Zoom-call blouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
Even though Santa would not be there.
The children were all snuggled in bed,
With visions of masked reindeer dancing in their heads.
Mamma sanitizing groceries, and me with a computer on my lap,
We were focused on making covid free gingersnaps….
When on the kitchen counter there arose such a clatter,
I ran to see just what was the matter.
Away to my wife, I flew with a flash.
Losing the computer, my knee and table colliding with a bash.
Her face so white, like new fallen snow,
Gave indication of what news will soon blow.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a tear and a smile that alleviated the fear.
With a bit of a quiver, hurried and clipped,
I asked about Grandma before the world tipped.
More lively than needed, and with no shame,
She shouted to the children, each by name.
“Jessica! Benjamin! Will and Scotty!
Get up! Get down here! Move your body!
Forget your slippers, don’t trip on the stairs,
I need you here, and yes, you can bring your teddy bears!”
With groggy eyes, and complaint with mom’s choices,
They stumbled their way to the kitchen with frustration in their voices.
Legos kicked across the floor,
And a quiet moment after the slam of a door.
Waiting in anticipation for mom to speak,
Scotty’s little eyes began to leak.
We’ve been so scared for news about Grandma,
There has been little care, even about Santa.
“Grandma is awake,
and away the ventilator, they will take.
She’s breathing on her own,
And soon a video of her sweet face will be shown.”
We all leapt with joy,
And from each little hand flew a toy.
Relief filling our hearts and souls,
This news more valuable than the Dead Sea Scrolls.
It is one year later now,
And to Covid, we have not yet said, “Ciao.”
Many lessons have been learned,
And our lives have been just a bit upturned.
The value of connection is higher now,
The grief from death, many of us have had to bow.
We choose to celebrate lives well lived in the past and present,
And now I ask you, how will this holiday be well spent?
It’s up to us to keep moving forward,
Love being our lighthouse, moving us safely shoreward.
My wish for you this season,
Is to live fully and forever be a beacon.

We all want to leave a legacy of some kind. And while some might want something really BIG, there’s a legacy that is left through images and memory as well.
